There used to be a lot more lungfish and they were spread throughout a larger network of freshwater rivers and lakes. Their numbers have gone down dramatically since Pangaea broke apart. This organ act like a lung, letting fish take oxygen from the air rather than water. Lots of aquarium fish have labyrinth organs, like kissing gouramis and crowntail bettas.

While breathing air is a primitive trait for fish, it can let them live in waters that might not be survivable for any fish respiring in the polluted water.

Instead, fish have gills, which are perfectly adapted for collecting this oxygen. So how do gills work? Well firstly water needs to pass across them, which is controlled by the operculum this is a flap of skin that acts as a boundary between the mouth and the gills.

The fish lowers the floor of their mouth. This makes the pressure in the mouth lower than the pressure outside, so water is drawn in. When the fish raises the floor of their mouth, the pressure inside becomes higher than the pressure outside.

This forces water out of the mouth through the operculum, and across the gills. If you keep fish at home you can watch this happen, the operculum moves each breathe. This sight is one of many reasons to keep fish. Regardless, because fish are living organisms, they need oxygen. Fish get oxygen through water, and they can become sick if the water surrounding them is not oxygenated enough.

The set of gills have blood capillaries which act as an oxygen receptor. When the capillaries receive the oxygen in the gills from the water, they absorb the oxygen into the bloodstream and trade it out with the excess carbon dioxide found within the fish. Labyrinth fish are finned freshwater fish that are in the Perch classification. They are called labyrinth fish because they have a labyrinth lung-type organ that allows them to breathe air. Fish breathe by absorbing oxygen from the water through their gills.

This can cause the fish to suffocate even while it is in water. If you are fishing in cold or deep water, it can be common to catch a fish that has a full swim bladder when it is pulled onto your boat. A swim bladder is an air bladder that contains oxygen and allows the fish to maintain its depth in the water.

The swim bladder ultimately creates buoyancy and allows the fish to remain in the same place with little effort. When catching and releasing a fish that has a full swim bladder, the fish may not be able to return to the depths of water it was in before it was caught. Another similar bacterial infection is amoebic gill disease AGD , which can also lead to the fish drowning.

Some of the most beautiful fish in the aquarium trade have been selectively bred to express the most desirable body modifications that can unfortunately cause the fish to drown. One great and sad example of this is the betta fish. Betta fish are a special fish to consider when it comes to breathing. These fish have a special organ called the labyrinth organ that allows them to go to the surface of the water and gulp in atmospheric air.

This organ is believed to have developed out of a need for more oxygen in water with low oxygen levels. Betta fish can also pull oxygen from the water via gills like other fish.

Betta fish varieties with long tails also have the ability to go to the surface of the water to gasp at air and pull in water through their gills. However, these fish have been so overly bred that their tails drag them down, making it difficult to emerge to breathe air or even swim at all.

Because of this, these fish become exhausted and usually end up leaning on the side of a decoration or at the bottom of the aquarium. If there is little water movement in the tank, oxygen will be depleted fast with your fish struggling to breathe and unable to get additional air. Once the fish has taken as much oxygen as it can from the water column via its gills and if it is still unable to swim to the surface of the water for air, the fish will drown.

If you are looking into getting a betta fish, make sure to research as much information as you can to prevent this from happening. If you already have a betta fish with a long tail, make sure that there is adequate water movement without making it more difficult for the fish to swim and keep the water well oxygenated.
