You can earn a maximum of 32 points. All Tisch freshmen are required to take two semesters of Expository Writing. There are no exceptions. Transfer students are required to take one semester of Expository Writing. Tisch students can pursue a second major in the College of Arts and Science.
We highly recommend that you wait until your sophomore year to discuss this with an advisor. No, you will receive an email and postcard with a link to the the Registration Handbook towards the end of May that will list what you are required to take and explain the registration process. Starting in the fall, you will meet with your faculty advisor at the end of every semester to discuss registration for the following term.
Because of the participatory and creative nature of many courses at Tisch, most departments do not permit prospective students to sit in on classes; those that do include Cinema Studies, Dance, and Performance Studies. To double major in Philosophy or in any department where there is an approved second major , you must first discuss the requirements of the major with the chair or director of undergraduate studies of that department. After an advisor from the second department completes the appropriate section of the form, the form is then submitted to the home department for approval.
Once approved, the second major is recorded on the official transcript. Registration is typically in November for the spring term and in April for the fall term.
Registration advising begins a month in advance of the registration period. You will receive notifications regarding registration advising appointments from your department. Please complete the online cross-school minor form. Although I enjoyed my core classes, which, by the way, helped me decide on a major, I know that some might find the core liberal requirements do not align with their interests. So the solution is plain and simple: do your research.
Do any of them sound similar to the core classes you have to take? Most likely. So the next step is to email your adviser and ask if you can take class X to meet a certain core requirement. The answer could be yes, so just ask away. Your advisers are there to help you! By doing so, you allocate your time and financial resources effectively while learning something that interests you. Every department has different policies, so it is always good to check to make sure that you are utilizing your credits as effectively as possible.

I suggest you organize your findings in Word, Excel, or Pages—whatever works for you; I have attached the table I used below to help you keep track. Be careful with courses that have prerequisites or ones that need to be taken in a certain order. Make sure to fill those in the table first, especially if they are required for your degree.

If you want to study away, take a look at all of the 14 different global sites NYU offers. Some sites might offer classes that allow you to work toward your degree when you are away. Usually, people study away for only one semester, but two semesters abroad is also possible! Before you decide, check if your desired site has classes in your intended major s or minor s.
See how many spaces you have remaining! The beauty of the program was its flexibility. I wanted a broad double major, and the communications field fit perfectly. MCC offers a wide range of classes in many subject areas: marketing, politics, gender studies, public relations, journalism…the list goes on! My particular interests lie in marketing and PR, and MCC has tons of classes to choose from in those fields. At the end of my first year, I marched over to the Steinhardt MCC office and proudly submitted my double major declaration form.
