He basically wants Edith to be his mistress, which is gross. The desperate Edith, however, pretty much agrees by the end.

Come on Edith, you were filling in the progressive female space left empty by the death of your sister so well. Why do this to yourself? Their severe looks and rigid ways make them a perfect match. That fantasy quickly dissolves. When Lady Susan asks Mrs. She sets it down, but Molesley swoops in and accidentally drinks it all.

Molesley puts on a drunken show, and the rest of the party is amused — as are we. Anna and Bates: Anna learns to dance in order to surprise Bates while they are in Scotland. Specifically, the new housemaid, Edna. Edna likes Branson, and she berates him for being a traitor to his class. She even kisses him — which gets her fired. Branson feels responsible for Edna, but Mrs. Isobel and Dr. Clarkson: Dr. Clarkson gets thisclose to asking Isobel to marry him. Isobel discreetly stops him — allowing the good Doctor to retain his dignity.

It is the spring The Great War is over and the long-awaited engagement of Lady Mary and Matthew is on, but all is not tranquil at Downton Abbey as wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues, and personal crises grip the majestic English country estate.

A tantalizing glimpse ahead: Lovebird servants Anna Joanne Froggatt and Bates Brendan Coyle face new ordeals in their star-crossed marriage. In this changing landscape nothing is assured, and could it be that even the war-weary Crawleys must fight a new battle to safeguard their beloved Downton?

Wedding preparations carry on, and romance blossoms, while joy, heartache and tragedy move the denizens of Downton Abbey.

The Great War is over, but all is not quiet at Downton Abbey as wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues and personal crises grip the inhabitants. Cora's mother travels to Downton Abbey for Matthew and Mary's wedding.

But will the couple even make it to the altar? Hoping to be financially rescued by her American grandmother, Mary conspires with Violet to make sure Downton puts on a bigger show than ever before.

Edith's big day finally arrives, but can her family be convinced that Strallan's age does not matter? Mary takes matters into her own hands. Branson finds himself in hot water over his political views, and Sybil's loyalty is tested.

A torn Ethel must make a decision about her son's future. Edith's exciting opportunity divides the family. As Sybil goes into labor, Dr. Clarkson clashes with a famous obstetrician over her care. Tempers fray when Isobel's kind gesture backfires. Branson's decisions are scrutinized. Bates' chance at freedom begins to slip away. Anna's patience is rewarded, Edith has an admirer, Matthew refuses to back down, and Branson's plans for the christening cause consternation.

A cricket match brings out Robert's competitive side. Violet's great-niece visits Downton, and a trip to London reveals more than meets the eye. The Crawleys — with a very pregnant Mary — head to Scotland to visit Rose's family, but everyone can sense the tension between their hosts. In the wake of tragedy, the Crawley family contends with emotional and financial trials. Surprises await the household, both upstairs and downstairs.

As mourning continues, Carson grapples with an unwelcome reminder of his past. Elsewhere, Edith reunites with Michael Gregson. Mary takes an interest in estate management but meets resistance from her father. Rose gets more than she bargains for at a tea dance in York.

An eclectic mix of guests proves for a memorable house party at Downton Abbey, but the celebration takes a dark turn as the evening comes to a close.
